Belief in Dog

I stumbled across the Mad City Skeptics via Facebook. Well, actually, I stumbled across them on MeetUp.com, but was then directed to the Facebook group.

Are atheists worse than Satanists? Please comment.

How Atheism Can Bring You Closer to God

I know. I know.

I thought long and hard about whether to tackle this one. But I have a solid logical case and I'm now going to explain why I think religious believers who want to get closer to GOD should consider converting to ATHEISM.I even think it is quite possible that you are "damned if you don't." But since there is an inherent catch-22 in being damned by a non-existent being, I'll leave that alone. This is my basic thesis...

Let us assume, as most religious believers do, that GOD is omnipotent, omnipresent, and omniscient, or put simply all-powerful, ever-present, and all-knowing. Would it not then be fair to say that GOD is everywhere in all things at all times? And if so, then is not GOD = EVERYTHING?

So, if you agree with that, then we have established that EVERYTHING is GOD. So isn't the worship of GOD then also the worship of EVERYTHING (i.e., the entire universe)? And if the universe is infinite, then isn't GOD also infinite, as most religious believers would agree?

That's fairly straightforward. Here is where it gets a little hairy if you can't keep your mind open...

Most religions like to "define" GOD using a set of beliefs unique to their particular faith. But there is a problem with defining INFINITY as most mathemticians will tell you. And in short, trying to define GOD is basically like trying to "count to infinity" or "divide" infinity by something. There is really no good way to define infinity. It is something beyond human comprehension.

But that doesn't stop religions from trying to define GOD, and once you do that, then you are no longer defining the infinite. You then have something FINITE, which based on the logic above must be something LESS THAN GOD.

Conversely, atheists fully accept the notion of an infinite universe, full of an infinite number of very real things moving through time in a consistent logical way FOREVER (i.e., infinite time). We atheists have no problem with that and since we believe in and accept the INFINITE EVERYTHING that is the UNIVERSE, we essentially believe in the ONE TRUE GOD as defined above.

So, religious believers, I ask you to consider if you can ever truly be close to GOD until you throw off the burdensome definitions imposed by your faiths and stop trying to pigeon-hole GOD into a box of your FINITE liking.

You see, as soon as you INSTITUTIONALIZE God (and I don't mean that in the sense of some bearded old white guy in a straight jacket being dragged into a padded room by orderlies), as your religious institutions would have you do, you have essentially made GOD finite and less than ALL-KNOWING, EVER-PRESENT, and ALL-POWERFUL. Thus, not really GOD but something less than GOD.

So, give it some thought. We atheists are pretty decent folks and we always welcome converts.
